On Monday, September 23, 2013, Occupy Our Homes Atlanta (OOHA) stood alongside Mildred Garrison-Obi in Stone Mountain, Ga. to announce and celebrate her victory. Cameras were on the scene for a press conference Monday afternoon as Mildred recalled her courageous story of liberating her home in March of 2013 after being foreclosed on and evicted last November.

Many people are curious about what made Mildred different from the thousands of others currently struggling with Bank of America to stay in their homes. Here is the difference: Mildred is a longtime civil rights fighter with a strong and loyal support system from OOHA, National Action Network, Rainbow Push Coalition and American Friends Service Committee who refuse to let the one percent win. She acted as bold resident-leader, launching a petition that garnered thousands of signatures, spearheading nonviolent direct actions against the bank and moving back into her house backed by an army of home defenders.

Fighters like Mildred show sleeping giants like Bank of America that everyday folks are very much awake and willing to confront “unbeatable” institutions head-on. Public pressure forced a Goliath-like institution to enter negotiations with Mildred and she won! Imagine what our country could be like if more people were willing to play David — the 99 percent would surely be victorious. Occupy Our Homes Atlanta is fortunate to have Mildred as a member of our leadership committee, and we look forward to her fighting alongside us as we continue to struggle for housing justice for all!
